Eberhard van der Laan wants to stay on as mayor of Amsterdam. But he wants to share his time or go differently.
It is common that mayors be reappointed if they want by themselves and no major problems have been there during term. "Looking back on the past five years I have been with your counsel, the judges, officials and Ajax enjoyed working hard for the city," Van der Laan wrote to the city council of Amsterdam.
The mayor writes that there is more balance in his life is necessary: "That does not mean that I am less than 100 percent will deploy, but I will try to divide my time differently so that this feature remains a privilege but a less severe bill draws on my personal life and that of my family. "
'City is good at'
The city looks "relatively good at" he says further: "I want to continue as mayor for a while subservient to this beautiful city and its wonderful people."
Van der Laan (PvdA) was sworn in and installed in the City Council on July 7, 2010. Mayors are appointed normally for six years; a mayor may be reappointed one or more times for the same period. Van der Laan has announced that he is going for a second term.
No surprise
The decision by Van der Laan comes as no surprise. In the town of the capital, almost everyone was sure he was going through. One councilor said yesterday at Het Parool that for 97 percent certain that Van der Laan would continue.
Van der Laan is popular in Amsterdam, showed off an Office Survey Research, Information and Statistics (OIS), commissioned by the newspaper. He received a 7.7 average.
The council will now compile a confidential committee to conduct a conversation with Van der Laan. The procedure appears to be a formality. If there are no objections within the council, the mayor may be re-appointed by the king.
