An employee of the social services, an amount of 100,000 euros stolen from the municipality of Bergen op Zoom.
The hired worker embezzled the money from the Intermunicipal Social Services Department (ISD) Brabantse Wal, a partnership of the municipalities of Bergen op Zoom, Woensdrecht and Steenbergen.
The municipality of Bergen op Zoom has reported fraud. That money was missing came to light through internal control of the service itself. There is at once a declaration and the employee is notified.
The employee is then reported to the police himself. The chairman of the ISD, the Bergse alderman Arjan van der Weegen, is relieved that the fraud was quickly discovered. He concludes that the guidelines and protocols for these things work well. The service is adequately insured for the damage suffered. Police and judicial authorities investigate the case.
