Dutch cyclists disobey. And rightly?

That Dutch on the bike stiff violated traffic rules would just be a sign of a well functioning transport system.

Like many other foreigners, surprised Lucas Brailsford about the bicycle culture of the Netherlands, and specifically in Amsterdam. Dutch remarkably disobedient, he noticed. They continuously cycling through red, on the sidewalk, on the wrong side of the road, without light, and then also with anyone behind. Without a helmet. And no policeman that stops them.

After two years of self lived in Amsterdam, he now poses the question:

Would the disobedience of cyclists just may be a sign of a successful traffic?

No priority of the police

The police are indeed very lenient. Recently it became known that the lack of bicycle fewer fines being. In 2011 73.008 cyclists were fined for driving without lights, in 2014 44.316 cyclists.

Last year, researchers conducted in 7510 bikers between one and three o'clock in the morning a breathalyzer in Groningen and The Hague, 89 percent had been drinking, 68 percent more than allowed. A spokesman for police Amsterdam-Amstelland said about that in Trouw:

The traffic on the side of the rider. Even as a cyclist through a red light, driving is a vehicle primarily liable in a crash.

Learn something from Netherlands

Other large cities could learn even some of Amsterdam, according to Brailsford. Although most major cities encourage cycling, working their "punishment system" against. A helmet obligation example, would discourage urban residents to their bicycles. In addition, bicycle disobedience little impact on traffic and passes through the flexible enforcement more cyclists while on the road.

But whether it's safer ...
