Shape

The problem with taking fingerprints from ivory except the porosity also the shape of the tusks. Due to the pointed shape of the material, there are often only small parts of fingerprints on.

The new powders consist of very small particles remain better stick to ivory. Therefore there are more details visible. Poachers by the new technique in theory also identify fragments of their vingerafdukken, weeks after they have touched a tusk.

In the experiment, scientists have managed to identiferen persons on the basis of a piece of ivory that they had 28 days previously grasped. However, within a week after the touch fingerprints were reconstructing the best.

Rhino

The powders were tested for the tusks of elephants, whales, hippopotamuses, and on a piece of ivory came from a rhinoceros.

"It is the first time that techniques to make visible fingerprints on ivory that are well researched," says researcher Leon Barron news on EurekAlert. "Our study shows that the new powders can be used to identify poaching, foresters and that can easily work with it in practice."
