The debate about refugees in schools leads to hardening of the debate. Students write papers in blandly that foreigners steal jobs and that the country is full. Teachers frighten them, said Rob Hommen of the General Education.

Leraren schrikken van verharding asieldebat op schoolFrom conversations which organized education union AOb radicalization in schools, found that teachers were shocked by right-wing extremist statements from students. "The worst example I heard was 'foreigners must leave the country, they take our jobs and houses,'" said Hommen. "It was handed in an assignment to a teacher of foreign origin."

Freedom of speech
That such statements may not pass muster, finds Hommen. "This is what should be teachers with students in conversation," he says. "Everyone can say what he likes, but argued that whatsoever."

These discussions concern is for the one teacher easier than the other, said Hommen. "The teachers have the most difficulty as students take positions that are contrary to the values and standards of the teacher. Then they find it hard to remain professional and there is no value judgment to hang on."

Pupils who rebel against refugees, are often afraid of the unknown, is the experience of Hommen. "At the moment integrate refugee children in school, then you notice that when students know each other, accept each other even more. Then the students are moderate and there is more respect for each other."
