A breakthrough for some 34,000 people suffering from ankylosing spondylitis, a condition where the joints become inflamed. Thanks to researchers at the AMC will have a new drug to market
There already exist medications for the disease, but they do not always work well. They'll fight the pain and inflammation, but not the deformities. Bechtrew's disease causes inflammation in the joints in the pelvis and spine.
The AMC has made a long study of a new drug against spondylitis. It shows that the drug is safe and can keep the disease under control. The results of the study are in The New England Journal of Medicine.
Inflammation
Ankylosing spondylitis causes inflammation that are painful and can cause patients end up in a wheelchair. 1 in 2000 people will have to deal with it.
When the new drug, the patient is given an injection every 4 weeks and which has often within one week effect and remains active for at least two years. It is estimated that approximately every four weeks patient should receive an injection of the new drug.
