Saudi Arabia executes 47 people

Saudi Arabia this morning 47 people were executed. They were convicted of terrorism.

According to authorities, most were involved in attacks on al-Qaeda carried out between 2003 and 2006. In addition, hundreds of people died.

Those executed is the prominent Shiite spiritual leader Nimr al-Nimr. He played an important role in the Shiite protests during the Arab Spring in Saudi Arabia in 2011.

The execution of Nimr could lead to unrest within the Shiite community in Saudi Arabia. When he was sentenced to death in October 2014 was that the Shiite minority fiercely protested.

Also in surrounding countries is feared tensions. Iran warned earlier that the execution of Nimr the Saudis' duration would come down. "Even in Shiite communities in Bahrain, Yemen and Iraq Nimr had many supporters.
