In the late 40th they were each other's great love: the Flemish Liliane Vandekendelaere and Marcel de Kimpe. But a jealous (clean) mother drove the lovebirds apart. Now, 60 years later, they found each other in the nursing home again.
The Flemish newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws writes about the love between the two. They met in Dadizele. Marcel (now 83), at that time cyclist. Liliane (82) took care of him.
Happiest time
"She filled my water bottle, was ready with my clothes and washed my legs. Cyclists were at times quite popular with the girls, I had to each finger may have another. But I lost my heart to Liliane," says Marcel. "It was the happiest time of my life."
But after four years of Marcel's mother sabotaging the relationship. While Marcel was in the army, she gave friends of his mission to write in their letters which Liliane had another. "In return, they received some money. An old friend of mine gave it to later years. Why? I'll never know for sure. I was an only child and suspect that my mother was jealous of Liliane."
Relationship beyond
Marcel and Liliane went off and married someone else. They had children, grandchildren ... But Marcel could not forget Liliane. A heart-shaped pendant with her photograph, which he had got from the late 40th Liliane, he kept the rest of his life. He hid it for his wife.
A few years ago, Marcel was back in Dadizele. He was talking to someone who could tell him that she was two kilometers away in the retirement home. After his wife was deceased, two years ago, he took the plunge and went to the retirement home. "She responded at first. But when I used her old nickname Titsje, lit up her eyes."
Gold pendant
The spark hit once again. Marcel gave Liliane gold pendant back 60 years ago that he had given her. It depends since then - with both their pictures in it - around her neck. "She was my first love and it will also be my last," said Marcel.
