What about your good intentions? Railway manager ProRail also fits in setting positive goals in the new year. The company will in 2016 more focus on innovation.
On the New Year's reception that ProRail showed three innovative developments: the rolpantograaf, smart sensors and front cameras on trains. The developments must ultimately ensure that the Dutch track is reliable.
1 Front Cameras
Since 2014 a large number of Arriva trains equipped with these cameras, which record the same as what the driver sees. During emergencies, such as a collision with a vehicle or person, the police, based on the pictures above do better and faster search. According to the rail manager, this is a great advantage to the traveler as a carrier, because the train services can be resumed quickly.
2 Rolpantograaf
In collaboration with the Delft University of Technology and University of Twente ProRail has developed the rolpantograaf, an environmentally friendly and sustainable way to drain power from the catenary.
Compared with ordinary pantograph need the rolpantograaf pushing less hard on the overhead, and therefore reduces wear on the pantograph itself, and the catenary. Resulting in less overhead fractures.
Completely new is the rolpantograaf not incidentally, the invention has been used for decades in the tram and trolleybus world. For trains the innovation was not (yet) suitable: namely trains use up to four times as much power to drive than cars and buses.
At this time, the pantograph is tested. If these tests turned out positive, the track manager expects that the pantograph at the earliest in 2020 can be deployed.
3 Smart Sensors
The smart sensors are applied to the infrastructure, such as rails and turnouts. These sensors form a connection with a special communication network of KPN. Through data exchange can remotely measure everything ProRail: temperature, vibration, acceleration, as well as air pressure and humidity.
