MPs redundancy into question

The redundancy pay for MPs is re-opened, after the voluntary resignation of D66 MP wassila hachchi. Yet it is unlikely that anything will change: the scheme is already enough retrenched, think most politicians.

It appeared last week that Hachchi would not use redundancy, Monday there was a very different explanation. After she had called from New York with D66 leader Alexander Pechtold, the party announced it Hachchi 'strives to waive redundancy, once she has a job. " And that arouses resentment.

Hachchi is not forced to leave, she suddenly decided himself to do something else. To help with the campaign of Hillary Clinton, runs the statement. And it is questionable whether they will be paid for and therefore no redundancy get more.

No longer tenable
According to many critics this is not where the intended scheme. For opposition party SP is the fuss around Hachchi's departure led to plead again for abolition of the redundancy scheme. ,, We are coming up rules for others. Those rules are also good enough for us, '' says SP Euro-MP Ronald van Raak. ,, This also applies to unemployment benefits. There is no reason to think why politicians should receive a wider scheme. This example goes to show that this system is no longer sustainable. An employee who resigns, also are not entitled to unemployment benefits. ''

Even ruling party PvdA for further retrenchment of the redundancy and aligning the rules with the WW. The PVV takes a long time that the entire system should be abolished. MPs have after their departure right up to three years and two months redundancy pay, as long as the unemployment benefit for ordinary workers.

Unlikely
Who departs five years before retirement age and has spent at least ten years in the House, given that entire remaining period redundancy. An MP earns 7705.12 euros gross per month. The waiting allowance is 80 percent of that amount in the first year. From the second year it is 70 percent. But despite the criticism it is unlikely that anything will change.

Most parties do not agree that all the redundancy pay scheme at the kick must for the issue Hachchi. ,, After three months redundancy pay should apply for a job as a politician and accept suitable work, '' said VVD MP Hayke Veldman. ,, And there's volunteering in the US not covered. ''

Verso Bears
Moreover find most parties believe that the redundancy scheme in recent years have been enough retrenched. ,, From being called fear profiteers, politicians have been greatly stripped the regime, '' said Mark Bovens public administration from the University of Utrecht.,, So get many councilors only two years unemployment pay and get them on welfare.Contrary to what people think, many former politicians have difficulty finding paid employment. ''

It would be unwise to completely abolish the scheme, such as the SP and the PVV want, find Bovens. ,, Politicians are not ordinary employees. If a minister or councilor road must, is not always to himself. It would be very unwise to abolish all provisions in such situation. For it must remain attractive for citizens to take responsibility for the public good. ''

Threshold
Marcel Boogers also professor of public administration at the University of Twente is fiercely opposed to further austerity. ,, This can lead people to whom it would be better if they resign, needlessly left too long otherwise they get into financial difficulties. Moreover, it would raise the threshold to enter politics: only then will people who have enough money on hand, occupy such a position. That we do not want, the threshold should be low right to hold public office. ''

Boogers knits his eyebrows or the departure of Hachchi. ,, I feel there is more to it than just its ambition to campaign for Clinton. ''
