Fishing companies still do too little to fight the listeria bacteria. Research by Omroep Gelderland shows that at least half of 21 examined fish processors in recent years was wrong on this point.

Among the companies surveyed are Foppen, which produces smoked salmon and other fish products to Albert Heijn, and Van Wijnen, supplier of Jumbo. Fool was in March 2015 three warnings NVWA, including one for not sorting out research on listeria.

Listeria can be dangerous for pregnant women, the elderly and people with lower resistance. In 2012 there was an outbreak of salmonella in Soother which four people deceased.

Decisiveness

Experts believe that the Dutch Food Safety Authority must intervene harder. "There is now given to warning only warning," said food technologist IJsbrand Velzeboer company Scienta Nova.

He says that the supplier of Jumbo in March received a warning in September and again, because there was no improvement in the meantime. Before anything happens, there is such a year has passed, says Velzeboer. "Then you are not decisive authority and can endanger lives. If you fish in the market products which do not meet the requirements listeria, that's what I'm concerned offense."

Under pressure

Rijkelt Beumer microbiologist from Wageningen University found that not only the fish processors go wrong. "That microbiological tests is insufficient, is to blame both producers NVWA. But supermarkets are apparently unable to put producers under pressure."

Both Albert Heijn and Jumbo said vendors are strictly controlled. AH proposes to own admission requirements that go beyond the law. Jumbo points out that the law had not been violated and that there have been no recalls.
