There will be a second giant telecom country. Once Vodafone and Ziggo merger, the new company is a major competitor to KPN. The little ones have preliminarily checked it. Five questions about the collaboration.

"The sacred belief is that as four telecom services must be able to deliver to the customer:. Fixed and mobile telephony, Internet and television Then you're ready for the future," said analyst Ed Achterberg of Telecompaper. At present, the only party KPN is offering it in a package.

In the Netherlands the company Ziggo no home cellular network. The company does offer mobile telephony, but before renting it at this moment capacity in the Vodafone network.

"Ziggo is great in the fixed network and also wants to offer mobile. Vodafone is great in mobile and wants to adopt," Achterberg summarizes. "They're not unkind busy, but do they really can make a fist, they will find that they have to go together."

It is doubtful whether the four-part package indeed the future. Achterberg: "For it may well be that the mobile networks are so fast that you do alone have enough And you will say. Those TV and fixed telephony I do not need anymore, because I do it all over the internet and mobile."

Will my subscription soon cheaper?

Yes and no, says Achterberg. "An interesting competition will emerge." Which can lead to discounts to bring in customers. "In the short term, I think the consumer is not worse from there."

But the reverse also occurs. Achterberg: "When UPC, Ziggo took over, the first thing was happening to the Ziggo went up prices." Side note here is that customers there at Got a sports channel.

Ultimately, the question is whether in the long term sufficient competition continues to exist if there are only two major suppliers. "Is that enough? Will they market not just collectively divide? What will happen to prices?"

Vodafone board member Barbara Knight would not comment on the prices. "Whether there are lower rates is ultimately up to the new management."

Should people away?

"Yes, of course," said Achterberg. By combining the two companies they can work more efficiently and economically. So they can use each other's infrastructure, IT systems and combined marketing and site. Therefore, the joint venture is expected to be definitely 3.5 billion less in costs.

Achterberg: "So you only need a backbone that is at the expense of employees, very simple.."

Knight also believes that it is inevitable that jobs disappear. "The expectation is that people have to go, but the numbers I can not say anything."

They are not too large?

A long-running debate between telecom operators and regulators in the Netherlands, which is about access to networks that lie.

KPN has a fiber optic network and copper network are located in the Netherlands, and therefore a very powerful position in the market. To allow fair competition, the company had to open up the networks of regulators and allow other providers.

Ziggo has a private cable network that covers a large part of the Netherlands. But because Ziggo is a lot smaller, and because European rules but a lot may be regulated, they did not want to open up. In addition, it is technically a little more complicated to make the cable for others, DSL or fiber.

"The question is: Vodafone Ziggo will soon have its joint network will open up so that Tele2 then can the mobile network Vodafone, or at Ziggo on the cable network?" Said Achterberg.

Vodafone always advocated itself to opening up the networks. "So it would be a little strange as there is now nothing would happen. It's looking a little coffee, the regulator will ultimately have to decide on."

How long is this gonna take?

Vodafone Netherlands and Ziggo must now come up with a plan to merge the companies together. There they will be doing about nine months, expecting De Ridder. In the meantime, the regulator, in this case presumably the European Commission examine whether there remains enough potential fair competition in the market.

Are the regulators agree, the collaboration is expected before the end of the year will be around.
