A Boston Marathon bombing survivor has died in a car accident in Dubai.
Victoria McGrath, 23, from Connecticut was only five feet away from the first bomb when it exploded during the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013.

Her leg was badly injured but she survived the tragic incident after a former US Army officer used a T-shirt to tie a tourniquet on her leg and a firefighter carried her to a medical tent

The image of her being carried later became one of the most iconic photos of the marathon bombings.

Following news of her death, Victoria’s mother, Jill McGrath, wrote in an email: ‘We are stunned, shocked and heartbroken’.

Victoria, who was a Northeastern University student, was with fellow student Perez Torres, from Puerto Rico, when they got into a car accident in Dubai, the Boston Herald reported.

The university said in a statement on Monday: ‘Northeastern University has confirmed that two undergraduate students have been tragically killed in a car accident overseas.

‘Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Victoria McGrath and Priscilla Perez Torres in this extremely difficult time.’

The university’s President Joseph E. Aoun said in a letter to the Northeastern community: ‘Victoria and Priscilla were vibrant, beloved members of our community, and their passing leaves a grievous absence in our community and in our hearts.

‘This is a heartbreaking loss to their families, friends, and to all of us in the Northeastern family.’

Three people died and more than 260 others were injured when two bombs placed near the Boston Marathon finish line exploded in 2013.
