AMSTERDAM - The air quality in the Netherlands does not meet European standards. There is more nitrogen dioxide in the air in many places than the maximum permitted annual average of 40 micrograms per cubic meter. This is especially on busy urban roads with lots of traffic case.

Unnamed-198.pngThis is contained in a report Wednesday that Milieudefensie submit to Alderman Abdeluheb Choho (Sustainability).

On the unhealthiest places in Amsterdam and The Hague, respectively Stadhouderskade and Hoefkade is 46 micrograms per cubic meter were measured. ,, Every year thousands of people die from unhealthy air, '' said Friends of the Earth.

,, Municipality and the government should really take drastic measures. "" The organization advocates for cleaner cars, softer ride and more use of bicycles and public transport.

The report is based on own measurements in 2015 and on measurements of living near busy roads. There is a year long measured at nearly sixty spots. At least eleven places NO2 standard was exceeded.

Commenting late Secretary Sharon Dijksma (Infrastructure and Environment) namely: ,, A clean and healthy air is important, so I think it's good that Milieudefensie bring this permanent attention '' According to her ,, clear from the monitoring. RIVM that there are only a few problems in the inner cities. To solve them, I have developed an action plan with the municipalities. ''

But according to Anne Knol, campaigner at Friends of the Earth, this plan ,, totally inadequate '. According to her, the air quality for years one of the biggest environmental problems in the Netherlands. The government should therefore do more to help municipalities to improve this. The government should according Knol bet more on cleaner cars, she said Wednesday at news BNR.
