LONDON (Reuters) - Nearly five weeks before the British referendum on membership have of the European Union according to a poll Brits surprisingly little understanding of Europe.

Unnamed-401.pngIn this weekend by the newspaper The Independent published survey is that a majority does not know how many countries are members of the EU. The union has 28 members.

Most respondents (86 percent) knew that the EU did not have its own army and 70 percent thought that the EU does not have a national anthem.

The EU indeed has no army, but the Ode to Joy. That is the official European anthem with a poem by Friedrich von Schiller (1759-1805) and the music of the Ninth Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827).

Respondents overestimate the influence of the EU on the UK legislation according to The Independent. More than 60 percent thought that most laws are drawn up in the country in Brussels. In fact, the percentage of European laws between 15 and 50 percent, depending on how much UK legislation is included that is only influenced by European rules.

The polls on the choice in the referendum of 23 June inconclusive. About half will now remain in the EU, the other half not.
