A man has admitted trying to stab four people at a Tube station in east London, but has denied trying to murder a man in the same attack.

Muhaydin Mire appeared at the Old Bailey in the capital on Tuesday via videolink from prison.

Dressed in a blue jumper and grey tracksuit bottoms, the 30-year-old spoke only to confirm his name and enter his pleas.

He denied one count of attempted murder, but admitted four counts of attempted wounding at Leytonstone Tube station on 5 December last year.

Prosecutors have described the attack as an act of terrorism.

Mire is accused of punching the alleged attempted murder victimm, who is in his fifties, to the ground.

It is alleged he repeatedly kicked the man before taking hold of the victim's head and inflicting a 12cm wound in his neck.

The victim underwent five hours of surgery.

It is also claimed Mire, of Sansom Road, Leytonstone, brandished the knife at other members of the public.

The case was adjourned until 31 May, and the trial is expected to last two weeks.
