17 dead after fire breaks out at elderly home in Ukraine

Seventeen people died after a fire broke out Sunday morning at a home for the elderly near Ukraine's capital, Kiev.

Eighteen people were rescued from the building, with five of them hospitalized with burns.
The fire in a two-story facility in Litki village was reported at 3.48 a.m. Sunday local time, Ukraine's State Emergency Service said.

More than 150 rescuers were involved in the operation, eventually putting out the fire.
The building was used as a temporary home for the elderly, emergency services said.
    Litki is northeast of Ukraine's capital, about 45 kilometers (28 miles) from central Kiev.
