A man and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a two-year-old boy from Broadmayne, Dorset.

The arrests come after police launched a murder investigation into the toddler's death, following a post-mortem examination on 1 June.

A statement from Dorset police said that the man and woman were both known to the child, who has not been named by police.

Officers were called by the ambulance service to a Broadmayne address on 26 May, where the two-year-old boy was seriously ill.

The toddler was taken to Dorset County Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Detective chief inspector Sarah Derbyshire, of Dorset police, said: "I can confirm that following the post-mortem examination ... the tragic death of this young boy is being treated as suspicious and a murder investigation, led by the Major Crime Investigation Team, has been launched as a result.

"I would appeal for the family to be given privacy at this extremely difficult time."

The man and woman arrested, both aged 21, are said to be assisting police with enquiries.

Inspector Mike Darby said: “I appreciate the incident has impacted on this close-knit community, but it is important we understand the full circumstances surrounding the death.

"An investigation has been launched and there may be some police presence in the village while detectives carry out their investigations."

Anyone with information is urged to call Dorset police on 101, or Crimestoppers via their anonymous hotline on 0800 555 111.
