He thinks government needs a leader who has the popular mandate to conduct negotiations on the exact form of the Brexit with the rest of Europe's leaders.

The search for a successor will begin. Only when that is found will will start negotiating a departure from the European Union. Cameron expects that leader will be found in October. Only at that moment the British government will make use of the possibility to withdraw from the EU.

Cameron says he is proud of his time as prime minister. He led a coalition government that the economic recession coped. He also says that the decision to hold a referendum on Britain's future in Europe was the right one. "We should be proud that we are the voice of the people trust."

at heart a big part of the Conservative group Cameron crowds last night to stay on as prime minister, whatever the outcome of the referendum was. But according to Cameron, he's not the captain who can lead the British ship towards the new relationship with Europe. Until the moment when a new leader is found, he will make every effort "to stabilize the ship."

The battle for the succession crack now loose. Conservative members of the House of Commons select two candidates. The members of the party can choose between these two candidates.

London Mayor Boris Johnson is currently the most likely successor. Interior Minister Theresa May also gets top marks. However, she has fought for the preservation of EU membership. But that happened much in the background.
