Friends of the Earth used to calculate air quality data of 393 Dutch municipalities. With a scientific calculation of the health effects of breathing in unhealthy air were compared with those of passive smoking.

On the basis of the comparison Rotterdam came with meegerookte almost seven cigarettes per day on the first place correctly. Amsterdam is in fourth place, after also Rijswijk Schiedam. Vlieland is the cleanest, as one smokes 'only' 2.8 cigarettes with.

The second-hand smoke from cigarettes is recently becoming rarer by banning smoking in public places. For health, it does not matter if you breathe polluted air or meerookt, says Friends of the Earth.

Lung cancer, cardiovascular disease, lower birth weight and reduced lung function in children occur in both cases, says Bram van Cavaliere Friends of the Earth: "It is now more secondhand smoke caused by cars, intensive farming and coal-fired plants than cigarettes."

Maximum speed
This month, Friends of the Earth sued the state to enforce the right to healthy air. "While relatively simple measures can be taken to improve air quality, have in recent years taken proper measures only worsen things," says Van Cavaliere, taking, among other claims to targets on increasing the speed limit on motorways to 130 kilometers per hour.

Friends of the Earth used for comparison between air pollution and passive smoking a scientific calculation method developed by scientists at the GGD Amsterdam, the RIVM and Utrecht University. Data on local air quality come from the RIVM.
