Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb reveals Saturday a monument to people who their bodies after their death available to science. Annually provides five hundred bodies.
The initiative for the monument comes from the Erasmus medical centre in Rotterdam, that each year one hundred bodies. They are used for research into new surgical techniques and for medical-scientific education.
The monument, designed by Wim ter Steege, stands on cemetery Hamad at the Rotterdam District Overschie. It consists of a glass plate with a poem, written by a medical student.
It is primarily intended as a place for next-of-kin who have no urn or tombstone to visit. The bodies are sometimes used for years for scientific purposes, to eventually be cremated or buried anonymously.
