In all silence and discretion is for the first time in our country a minor died after euthanasia. From a legal point of view, that possibility exists already since the spring of 2014, but never came across the so far.

The doctor who performed the euthanasia has this week delivered a dossier to the Federal audit and Evaluation Committee on euthanasia. That is confirmed by among others professor Wim distelmans, Chairman of the Committee. It is a Dutch-language file, suggesting that the euthanasia is carried out in Flanders. How old the younger was at his death, is not known, however, that he or she was suffering from a terminal illness.

Belgium is the only country in the world where euthanasia is possible for all minors. Only in Netherlands is there a similar scheme, but there it can only from 12 years.

The enlargement of the euthanasia law from 2002 there is already two and a half years. Since that approval there is severe criticism from home and abroad. According to professor Deo is unjustified: "only in very exceptional and hopeless cases, euthanasia at a minor really an option."

That it took so long before the law was applied for the first time, proves that. "Fortunately, there are very few children who are eligible, but that doesn't mean we should deny them the right to a dignified death."

The law says, among others, that the self is the minor who repeatedly to euthanasia should ask. There is also formal permission of the parents.
