'Jihad Suspects ask for asylum in Ter Apel'

Every month requires some jihadist suspects asylum in Ter Apel. Even those refugees simply go to the asylum procedure, says the detective northern Netherlands. "But if we have suspicions, we sit there shortly."

Hugo van Klaveren, one of the eight sector heads the investigation in the northern Netherlands, says in the Dagblad van het Noorden that among the refugees in Ter Apel people sitting with a suspect war past. "If there is a suspicion, we go to the intelligence service. Does someone at risk? Does anyone have a risk, then it is well monitored," he says.

Armed struggle
Van Klaveren says that 'everything' is among the large number of refugees: highly educated, criminals and fighters. For the latter category would be people who participated in the armed struggle in Syria. "Jihadists and fighters of the Assad regime. For us it does not matter which side they fought."

According to the police officer, not all asylum seekers with a suspect war past immediate danger to society. Among the refugees are deserters, who are not secretive about their participation in the war. "But they do not want anymore," says Van Klaveren. "That's why they come here."

Least resistance
Also, a terror expert at Clingendael research institute doubts that terrorists are among asylum seekers. "From Terrorists are known to take the path of least resistance. That is seeking asylum in such a large current is not."

A police spokesman late on RTL Nieuws that the interviewee "does not recognize the quotes that are attributed to him."
