King and queen at commemoration in London

King Willem-Alexander and Máxima Queen this morning attended the British Remembrance Day in London.

The royal couple with the British royal family commemorates the dead who fell in the First and Second World War.

At the Cenotaph, a war memorial in Whitehall, in the heart of London, were the stroke of 11 hours (12 hours in the Netherlands) two-minute silence was observed. After that Queen Elizabeth laid a wreath, followed by King Willem-Alexander. Queen Máxima watched from a balcony at the monument.

The Dutch royal couple wanted his presence to thank the British for their part in the liberation of the Netherlands 70 years ago.

Shorter than usual

The ceremony this year was shorter than usual so that Queen Elizabeth (89) and Prince Philip (94) not so long have to stand outside.

On November 11 at 11 am in 1918 there came an end to the First World War. The British Remembrance Day is always the Sunday before November 11th. At the commemoration in doing the center of the British capital 8 000 troops along.

In the days surrounding "Remembrance Sunday" many Britons wear a poppy. The flower has become the symbol of all fallen soldiers.
