Boy (13) in a coma after cinnamon game

Five days he was in a coma, the 13-year-old Germain from Hilversum. He took part in a game of cinnamon, the cinnamon challenge, and touched by lack of oxygen in a coma.

Germain did a week ago join a game where you have to take a bite of cinnamon powder and it needs to address without drinking. Because the cinnamon powder dries, it can cause serious breathing problems and choking.

Worst nightmare

"When a girl on her socks ran to our house I knew it was wrong," says Adriana stepmother. "What I saw was my worst nightmare. My husband immediately began CPR and paramedics have taken it." An adrenaline injection caused his heart was a little revived, and the boy with sirens screaming was taken to the hospital.

Once in the hospital, doctors do not know whether Germain would awaken from his coma. "I have no words for it. This is the worst that can happen," said his stepmother against RTV NH.

After five days, awakened the boy, but it is not yet known whether he left with permanent damage. "We know that there is no major damage, but the further course we do not know yet. According to the doctors it's a miracle he's still alive." Germain, according to his stepmother still very confused and do not know what happened.

Parents and kids warn

Adriana wants her story to warn parents and children of the dangers of the cinnamon challenge. "Children often do not see how harmful is cinnamon, which you should not do this. It may just be fatal to you."

The cinnamon challenge first arose around 2001 and then became increasingly popular. In 2013 came physicians in the United States with the warning that the game can have serious health consequences. It can cause serious breathing problems, asthma attacks, pneumonia and a collapsed lung.
