The Rotterdam metro network is likely within the next five years to develop his jacket by the influx of more passengers and the arrival of the Hoekse Line. The RET has been working behind the scenes on a plan to cope with rapid growth in the future.

That such a plan is badly needed, is evident from the figures. Travelers in 2010 still 431 million kilometers by subway, which rose until the beginning of last year to 531 million. "We see that parts of the metro network in a few years reach their limits," said RET director Pedro Peters. This mainly goes with the E-line, where passenger numbers exploded from 9000 to 42 000 passengers per day. But also in the Benelux line in Schiedam and around stations Blaak and Wilhelmina square is already very busy.

The E-line, the problem was so dire that there first has intervened. Since February there is additional material drive in the morning. "But that can not be everywhere. Not all stations can longer subways and some deploy additional metros, is not one, two, three did. For example, you should consider power and can handle a network. Moreover, new subway cars not in the showroom and are not delivered within a few months. "

FEATURED IN LUXURY PROBLEM
Internally, there is at the transport company therefore set up a project to see what happens over the next five years. "RET and the Metropolitan Region, in fact, have a luxury problem," Peters says. "There are so many passengers that we have to make choices. For example, we order new equipment, we get the stations or is it a combination of both? "If the RET would not intervene, situations would arise where passengers can no longer step because subways too full. Moreover, traveling not really comfortable. "And an uncomfortable journey, the last thing you want as a carrier."

Around the summer, the first results of the project are expected.
