Annually 250 child marriages in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands in recent years closed some 250 child marriages a year, research shows.

In eighty cases per year are asylum seekers, including from Syria, Afghanistan, Eritrea, Iraq and Iran. Furthermore, these illegal marriages with minors are especially common in the Somali community.

The research was conducted by the University of Maastricht and the Verwey-Jonker Institute commissioned by Asscher Minister of Social Affairs.

Precise figures are according to the researchers did not give. Often married abroad after the couple comes to the Netherlands or in a closed community, out of sight of the Dutch government.

Minister Asscher annually attracts a million to combat the phenomenon. With that money teachers are trained to recognize forced marriage. Also key people trained in migrant groups to child marriages negotiable.

In the Netherlands may only be married in 18 years. On forced marriage is a prison.
