Attacks in Brussels: what we know now

Our country was rocked yesterday by the two worst terrorist attacks ever in Belgian history. In three explosions, two in the departure hall of Brussels Airport, and one in the Maelbeek metro station in the center of Brussels, were at least 30 dead and 230 wounded. This is what we now know:

The attacks at Brussels Airport and Maalbeek

• In the double bombing in the departure hall of Brussels Airport has a dozen deaths. There are also dozens wounded, many of whom are seriously injured.

• At least one of the blasts at the airport is caused by a suicide bomber.

• There certainly one nail bomb was used, intended to maximize casualties. The bomb is partly responsible for the often very serious injuries of the victims.

• About half an hour after the attacks in the airport, a bomb exploded on a subway car at the station Maelbeek, in the heart of the European district. Prominent twenty dead and over a hundred injured.

The victims

• A list of names of victims is not there yet. Because it is now identified the first victim. It is a 36-year-old woman from Peru.

• Among the victims there are some Americans. The FBI therefore sends a delegation to our country.

• Shortly after the attacks, people started to gather around the Fair in the heart of Brussels. They wrote messages of support with chalk on the ground and laid flowers and candles down.

The perpetrators

• Police stop a raid at least one fugitive suspect.

• Throughout the day and night there were house searches. In one of them an IS-flag, nail bomb and chemical products was found.

• The police last night sent a second detection message. After a message was spread on one of three possible perpetrators of the attacks in Zaventem, police now requesting the identification of the three suspects. Who will recognize the men or have useful information is asked to contact the investigators. That can be done via the toll free number 0800 30300 and via opsporingen@police.belgium.eu.

The measurements

• The threat level was raised yesterday for the country to level 4. This is the highest level.

• Interior Minister Jan Jambon (N-VA) announced yesterday off three days of national mourning. Today meets the inner cabinet to see what national mourning ceremonies will be organized.

• The Zaventem airport will remain closed. According to aviation expert Luk De Wilde is particularly likely will not open the airport during the busy Easter weekend.

• The major railway stations in Brussels are open today and the trains again progressing normally. SNCB travelers do recommend to arrive well in time since there are additional security checks.

• On the subway ride lines 1 and 5, lines 2 and 6 are not operated.
