According to the activists died in 2015 six million piglets before the slaughter, more than once in a year. The sows are bred so that they receive an average of more than thirty piglets per year. There are about six times as much as in nature, according Pigs in Need. "As a result, the average birth weight decreased and the piglets are weaker and more vulnerable. They are often sick, become rather hypothermia or injured and are more likely to starve."

According to the organization are dying young piglets sometimes hours or days until the farmer finds them. "Then they are beaten to death, but that is not always making them suffer even more," says Pigs in Need.

The foundation requires European rules to put an end to the breeding of more and more piglets per litter. The livestock must be checked for sick, injured and dead pigs. For companies with a piglet mortality rate of over 10 percent, there should be a mandatory improvement plan.
