First arrest for Turkish tensions

For the first time someone is arrested in relation to the tensions in the Turkish community. That happened Monday morning in Rotterdam. Police expect to make more arrests.

It is a Dutchman (42). Who is suspected of sedition, insult, intimidation, hate speech and vandalism after the failed coup in Turkey.

The unrest is linked to the attempted coup in Turkey and the grim atmosphere that has emerged in the Turkish community between supporters of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and supporters of spiritual leader Fethullah Gulen. Erdogan accuses sit behind the last coup. Police will not say which group the accused belongs.

A special police team investigating the declarations and notifications made in Rotterdam after the coup attempt. There are now more than 80 known reports.

In the Rotterdam region seem to have been more reports than in other regions. The tensions within the Turkish community there were high, led to threats, intimidation and destruction and thus a widely felt unsafe.

Since the failed coup, there have been approximately 175 reports in the Netherlands. ,, It plays everything in the Turkish community, which leads to stress. So keep parents as children from school and are being boycotted companies, '' says Peter Slort. He's with the police responsible for the national approach to these tensions.

,, It has not yet been massive disturbances in the Netherlands, '' he says. ,, There have been a few skirmishes. '' The majority of the reports is done for threats and insults expressed via social media. ,, It turns temporarily to stay with threats. They are performed in few cases. ''

Slort stressed that the police with everyone committed in the Turkish community. ,, We are emphatically police everyone. We have no preference for any group. ''

Police are trying to police officers as well and taking due contact with the Turkish community. Slort: ,, So we try to keep an eye on what is going on. We focus on de-escalation, but if we have to take immediate action. ''
