The abolition of the basic grant seems to change the student culture radically. Last year was only 13 percent of the starting students on smoking. The year before it was 28 percent.

Naamloos2-501.pngThe number of students going to live in lodgings halved last academic year, writes newspaper Trouw . Almost half of the students who still live at home, say they do so because they receive no basic grant. That scholarship of 270 euro for students living away from home came in September fell last year.

At the same time, prices for student accommodation have never been so high, according to research from the National Union of Students (LSVb). So students pay on average 424 euros in Amsterdam for their dorm. The average basic rent over the country is currently at 323 euros for a room.

Profound implications

As students have more often live at home also affects their study, fears the association of student housing Kences. Students choose rather than an education close to home. "It can have a major impact on student participation, freedom of choice for students to study cities and the development of knowledge cities '' says Kences director Ardin Mourik.

The association assumes that the trend of students living at home will persist. "Based on previous scenarios that expectation there."
