Examine the authenticity of Apple Between Art and Kitsch

There will be an investigation into the work of art that earlier this month was attributed in the television program Antiques Roadshow to Karel Appel. "We have received many signals that this is not going to be a real apple," said Erik Dekker of AVRO TROS

The broadcaster enlists the help of the Karel Appel Foundation, the organization that controls all the works that are attributed to Apple. "Such research could take up to two months," said Dekker. "But we want to be absolutely sure."

Artist Jon Martens claimed yesterday in the RTL Z program Live From Liempt he made the relief in 1972. The owner of the work says her father's wooden object long before bought, just after the war.

Nonsense Story

In another broadcast of Live From Liempt three experts said yesterday that the relief is not of Karel Appel. Appraiser Auke van der Werff and gallery owner Willem Baars called the claim a "nonsense story."

Art Connoisseur Richard ter Borg said in Antiques Roadshow that the relief late forties sold by Cobra-artist Appel. He estimated that the work is worth between 20,000 and 25,000 euros.
