Aggravating circumstances

The penalty is equal to the demand of the Public Prosecutor. It is also the maximum sentence that could be imposed in this case.

The court imposed the maximum sentence because there is no mitigating circumstances, such as T., the lawyer said, but rather aggravating circumstances. So are the psychological consequences of rape for the victims of the court still large, over 14 and 20 years after the act. One of them is even emigrated, because they no longer feel safe in the Netherlands.

The judge had also weigh the rapes great fear led among women in the Utrecht region.

In the summer of 2014 was the 52-year old T. caught. The native of Nieuwegein was arrested for bicycle theft and had to give DNA. That DNA was found to match the DNA of the Utrecht serial rapist.

The judge says that in three of the four cases there is the "strongest possible form of DNA evidence". In the fourth case, the DNA traces less obvious, but by other evidence, the Judge T. convinced that there also is the culprit.

Suicide

Outside the DNA evidence, the court also made use of statements from victims and relatives of T. The behavior was that T. showed when he had to give DNA suspicious. He then sought information on the Internet about suicide, Utrecht serial rapist, DNA evidence and benefits during detention. T. was stressed and suicidal in that period.

The police wrote 22 sex offenses in the past to the Utrecht serial rapist in 1995, 1996 and 2001. As it is already a long time ago, can most cases not be proved or T. behind it or not.
