Rechtbank geeft chimpansees basismensenrechten

The Supreme Court of New York has determined that the monkeys come under habeas corpus, writes The Verge. The ruling comes two years after the Nonhuman Rights Project (a foundation that works for the rights of animals other than humans), lawsuits was filed to rid New York four chimpanzees were detained.

UNLAWFUL DETENTION
The foundation argues that the animals are confined illegally, and the judge went along with it. Earlier, three lower courts had already disposed of the business, but the foundation invariably appealed. Eventually, the Nonhuman Rights Project managed to convince the Supreme Court that the chimps were so intelligent, that the court they essentially basic rights awarded.

The ruling is not quite final. A representative of the Stony Brook University may still bring a defense before the court may be that the judge, after hearing the university still decide that the monkeys may simply be detained. The Nonhuman Rights Project wants the animals to go to a shelter.
