How can you live on a budget?

Rising rents and low incomes make it to tenants increasingly difficult to make ends meet. More than half a million people (18 percent) in the Netherlands is struggling to pay the rent and other housing costs.

According to figures from the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL).

About 85 percent of that half a million people is (far) below subsistence level. That says a French painter who worked on the study . These people mostly rent social housing. The maximum, basic rent for such a house is 710.68 euros in 2016. But what do you get in return?

 

AMSTERDAM

To 687.01 euros you can live in Amsterdam New-West. This is a gallery house with two bedrooms of 58 square meters. You live in a building with mostly seniors. The distance to the center of Amsterdam is approximately three minutes by public transport.

UTRECHT

Who would want to live in the center of Utrecht, should settle for less for more. At the ground floor apartment in downtown, you pay 654.14 euros for 33 square meters. You then have two rooms. You do have a small back garden.

GRONINGEN

To 705.34 euros you have in Groningen an apartment on the first floor with four rooms (three bedrooms). The total area of the house is 64 square meters. The house has a balcony at the front and back. Within twenty minutes you are on public transport in the center of Groningen.

THE HAGUE

For social housing in Hague Southwest, you pay 703.21 euros basic rent. This spacious family house of 70.85 square meters has five rooms and a garden. You do not live close to the center: by public transport you would be about half an hour.

MAASTRICHT

This apartment built in 1956 in Maastricht is available for 628.75 euros. The total area covers 60.62 square meters and has two bedrooms. A garden you have not, have a balcony of 2.5 square meters. You do not live too far from the city center: within twenty minutes you are there by public transport.

ARNHEM

Within half an hour you are at this detached corner house in Arnhem. The basic rent is 700.81 euros and the living area 69 square meters. As seen in the picture, you also have a garden and even a shed.
