Bacteria ravaged body of Alex: "My son dared to give a kiss'

A flesh-eating bacterium lost Alex (36) legs, arms and part of his face. "My son Sam was afraid to kiss me again. That rejection was terrible."

He first thought it was a harmless flu. But colds and headaches were getting worse and worse. When the Briton Alex Lewis blood began to urinate and had a high fever, he knew it was wrong lot. Also struck parts of his skin from black and purple.

3 percent chance
It has been almost three years since Alex was told he had a life-threatening streptococcal infection. He had contracted a blood infection and kidney worked hardly. His legs and arms were found infected and had to be amputated. Like his lips. The probability of survival was only 3 percent.

"My world collapsed. I had such a beautiful life, and suddenly I had to fight against something I had absolutely no control over," he says in an interview with The New Scientist.

He was prudent before Alex got sick. He loved to be at home with his son. "Because I could all day care for my son. We were at that time very attached to each other."

But the disease 'at' literally the body of Alex. "My son dared me not to kiss anymore. Terrible." In the documentary The Extraordinary Case of Alex Lewis this week has been released, he tells his story. "I want my son is proud of me."

He continues: "It was a tough struggle for me and my wife is so frustrating when you look out the window and see your son play football, and you as a father can not do it...."

Alex eventually won the battle and overcame the bacteria. According to doctors a miracle.He received prostheses to walk again and learned to live with its limitations. "Instead of playing football, I build now with my son in the living forts."

Also brought the disease Alex and his wife closer together. "It may sound ridiculous, but I'm finally glad that this happened to me. Now I appreciate much more what I have." People who have seen the documentary, agrees: "Alex and his wife are a great inspiration."
